When our Head of Product Development, Sam Horseman, joined a hands-on training session with A121 Academy, it was meant to be a chance to see our first solar kit in action. A121 Academy is one of the industry's most respected solar training providers, founded by Mark Allison of Power Sonic, with deep roots in inspection and testing, EV charge points, solar and battery storage. For Klein Tools, it became a start of something more.
Working alongside some of the most experienced solar installers in the country, the session covered the practical realities of the job: making off MC4 connectors under time pressure, working safely on pitched roofs, and navigating the dozens of small tasks that don't always make it onto a spec sheet. It was also a reminder that conditions on-site are rarely ideal. Installers regularly work through strong winds, driving rain and blazing heat, often all in the same week. What became clear very quickly was this: installers need far more than a crimper and a stripper to get the job done properly.
Sam explains: "Spending the day working alongside installers who do this every single day was a real eye-opener. You quickly see that a solar installation isn't just about the electrical connections, it's roofing, fixings, cable runs, testing, and staying safe and comfortable while doing it all, whatever the weather throws at you. That's what pushed us to think bigger about the range."
That day on the roof became the catalyst for the Klein Tools Renewable Solutions range. Building on those learnings, it was clear that we needed to support the whole installation, not just the electrical connections, but the roofing work, the bracket fixings, the cable management, the data terminations, and the safety products that keeps installers safe and comfortable through long days on site, in all weathers.
